Ice Watch April 23 2014
Georgian Bay ice is thinning rapidly, decreasing in density daily. Ice on the north and eastern shorelines has retreated dramatically, and reports out of Twelve Mile, Go Home, and Kempenfelt Bays all point to imminent ice out, but we’re not quite there yet.
The Heart of Stone project is hoping to be back in the water on May 2. Fingers crossed.

Well, finally we see the pack drifting from shore, exposing the “fast” ice gripping the shoreline and islands. In my library of ice analysis images, the Bay now looks like a typical March 5th.
That being said, IF we get back to normal temps, the melt will be rapid. Put me down for May 9th (Bayfield Harbor opening).
Well, missed the May 2 date but beat May 9, I paddled out of Snug Harbour on May 6. Parry Sound and Snug Harbour are totally clear, with just some disintegrating ice fields offshore. http://www.heartofstonephoto.com/photos/ice-watch-may-6-2014

Can’t wait to see a time lapse of winter from the Snakes (BTW that’s me urinating in your field of view).
BTW I thought they were tearing down Red Rock light soon. Hopefully that plan has been altered.
